MEN'S SOCCER NOTCHES 1-1 STALEMATE WITH WILDCATS

Tuesday, October 18, 2011(Newton, Massachusetts) - Through the final 65 minutes of play neither team could find the back of the net through the second half and two extra periods ending a 1-1 stalemate against hosting Mount Ida College men's soccer and visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Johnson & Wales University Tuesday afternoon in Newton, Massachusetts.

The Mustangs hold at an overall record of 7-7-1 stymied at a 4-4-1 league slate while the Wildcats notch their second tie of the year with a 2011 record of 4-10-2 going 2-5-2 in conference competition.

It was a very physical battle throughout the entire contest showcasing a combined total of 33 fouls, four yellow cards and a red card.

The visitors got on the board first early in the first half around the 18 minute mark on an unassisted score from Wildcat freshman O'kyle Corridon (Selden, NY/Newfield) for the 1-0 lead.  Corridon beat a Mount Ida defender and chipped a shot from the left side of the box over the goalkeeper's head nestling itself into the right corner for the advantage.

Not even 12 minutes later (30th) a hard foul in the box by a Johnson & Wales defender awarded the Mustangs a penalty kick that freshman Gilberto Alvarenga (Marlborough, MA/Marlborough) converted stymieing the score at 1-1.  The free kick by Alvarenga was his third successful penalty kick of the season.

With many chances on either side during the entirety of the second half neither team was able to convert a score.  Through the final two overtimes, Mount Ida had most of the chances, including one last in the second overtime that sailed high for the inevitable 1-1 tie in conference play.

Mount Ida goalkeeper Mat Pils (Monroe, CT/Masuk) was outstanding between the pipes notching one save and snuffing out many oppositional chances.  Wildcats netminder freshman Ryan Dzierawski (Oakland, MI/Rochester-Adams) chipped in five saves for the visitors.

The Mustangs will travel to GNAC member St. Joseph's College (ME) this coming Saturday in another crucial GNAC match-up with play-off implications with game time slated for 2:30 p.m.   The Wildcats will host their final GNAC contest of the season against visiting Suffolk University starting at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday as well.
