The Mount Ida College men's soccer team dropped their season opener this past Tuesday at non-conference Massachusetts Maritime Academy by a score of 4-2. Maritime sophomore Ryan Fischer (Marshfield, MA) netted a pair of goals scoring three times in an 11-plus minute span midway through the second half to seal the victory for the hosts. The Mustangs fall to 0-1while the Buccaneers improve to 1-0 thus far.
Senior Leo Roy (Manchester, NH) gave the visiting Mustangs (0-1) an early 1-0 advantage 7:02 into the contest when he converted a crossing pass from junior Justin Murphy (Holbrook, MA), but Fischer evened matters for the Buccaneers in the 31st minute when he converted a penalty kick after drawing a foul in the box. Junior Breandan Draper (Lexington, KY) then converted another Murphy crossing pass with just 41 seconds remaining in the opening half for a 2-1 Mount Ida edge at the break, setting up the hosts' second half heroics.
Fischer's second tally of the night in the 56th minute enabled the host Buccaneers (1-0) to forge a 2-2 tie, as he converted feeds from freshmen Tim McDonough (Framingham, MA) and Derek Young (Falmouth, MA) on the equalizer, and sophomore Josh Hoy (Camp Hill, PA) followed with what proved to be the game-winner just 3:22 later when he deflected a Young pass from midfield in the 59th minute. Massachusetts Maritime received an insurance marker in the 67th minute of play on an own goal to account for the final score.
Sophomore Steven Enright (South Kingston, RI) made eight stops in net for Mount Ida while MMA sophomore Mark Mullaney (Bridgewater, MA) picked up his first collegiate win in goal with a four-save effort as the Buccaneers outshot the Mustangs by a 23-11 margin for the match.
Mount Ida heads to Cambridge, Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon for a non-league tilt with Lesley that begins at 4:30 p.m.
