The Mount Ida College men's soccer team dropped a critical 3-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss to hosting Suffolk University this past Wednesday night in Somerville, Massachusetts. The Mustangs, who have now lost three GNAC contests in a row, fall to 5-10 overall, 4-4 in conference play plunging to sixth place in the GNAC standings.
Sophomore Danny Lloyd (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) scored the Rams first goal in the game's fifteenth minute as he was led up the field by a pass from sophomore David Best (Westminster, MA). Lloyd then got in a foot race up the field with a Mustangs' defender before making a dazzling play kicking the ball behind him before firing a shot high into the opposing net for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.
Senior Nick Celia (Hanson, MA) struck 24 minutes later converting in front of the net on a feed from sophomore Stephen Gaudet (Peabody, MA) to give the Rams a 2-0 edge in the first half.
The Rams scored their third goal 15-minutes into the second half as senior Berhnard Lotterer (Lima, Peru) knocked in his fourth goal of the season coming off a corner kick from junior Luis Flores (Madrid, Spain).
The Mustangs outshot the Rams 16-15 for the game, but were not able to capitalize on any of their scoring chances. Their best chance came off a shot by junior Hermes Lima (Boston, MA/West Roxbury) that was deflected over the net by a leaping Capousis. Mount Ida's leading scorer freshman William Daniels (Bethany, CT/Notre Dame) finished the game with seven shots total, but six either sailed high or wide of the Rams' goal.
Sophomore Steven Enright (South Kingstown, RI/Prout) made four saves in the loss for the Mustangs. Junior goalkeeper Alex Capousis (Annapolis, MD) made his first start of the season for the Rams, stopping all five shots on goal.
The Mustangs have a crucial GNAC match-up this coming Saturday at
Emerson College starting at 12:30 p.m. that could decide whether or
not Mount Ida hosts a home game during the first round of the post
season tournament.
