After coming within a goal of capturing the Great Northeast Athletic Conference crown a year ago, the Mount Ida men’s lacrosse team looks to be right back in the thick of the league’s title chase if the prognostications of the conference’s pre-season coaches’ poll are correct.
The Mustangs are picked fourth in this year’s ranking of the league’s mentors, as 15th-year Head Coach Andrew Fink’s squad amassed 77 points that included one first place vote. Defending champion Lasell, who edged Mount Ida in last year’s tournament title contest, was selected to take top honors once again, and the Lasers are followed by Johnson & Wales and Norwich, who each received a first place vote in the 10-team conference race.
Fink, who sports a 163-82 (.665) mark in his first 14 seasons as the Mustangs’ mentor, guided Mount Ida to 14 overall victories (the second highest single-season total in program history) and its third berth in the GNAC championship match in the last five campaigns last spring. The Mustangs open their 2018 slate on Wednesday, February 28th with a trip into Boston to square off with Emerson in a non-league clash at 4:00 p.m. EST.
