FINAL: EMERSON 13, MOUNT IDA 12 (DOUBLE OVERTIME)
BOSTON, Mass. -- Freshman Joe Meyers’ man-up goal with 1:58 remaining in the second overtime lifted Emerson to a 13-12 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Mount Ida in the season opener for both teams Wednesday afternoon at Rotch Field.
The host Lions (1-0) trailed by two (12-10) with 5:14 remaining in regulation after senior Joe Gengarelly (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) had given the visiting Mustangs (0-1) their second such cushion of the fourth quarter, but Meyers sliced Emerson’s deficit in half with 2:05 to play and junior Jared Brush (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) forced the extra session with a marker that came with 14 seconds remaining. Both teams had a pair of chances to net the golden goal in the first overtime period before Meyers provided the heroics for the Lions on the man-advantage situation following an offside call.
Mount Ida jumped out to a 4-1 lead just 5:37 into the contest, but Emerson evened matters with three tallies in just under four minutes and took a 5-4 edge on sophomore Austin Franklin’s marker 3:49 into the second stanza. Senior Marcus Donahue (Braintree, Mass.) provided the equalizer for the Mustangs with 6:29 to play in the half, but junior Cameron Radenberg (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied twice in a 1:19 span to stake the Lions to a 7-5 advantage at the break. The visitors scored three times in the opening 5:04 after intermission to take an 8-7 edge on sophomore Dakari Eason’s (Norwalk, Conn.) goal, and a pair of ties and three lead changes, Mount Ida took the first of its two-goal advantages early in the fourth quarter on a Donahue tally, setting up the hosts’ heroics in the closing minutes.
Brush finished with four goals and a pair of assists in the win for Emerson, which received a hat trick and four helpers from Radenberg to go with two tallies and an assist each from Meyers and Franklin. Freshman Tim Doyle added a marker and helper on the day for the Lions, who received a goal from senior James Monroe-Chausse (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and a pair of assists from freshman Stevie Powers.
Donahue netted a match-high five goals in the setback for Mount Ida, which received a pair of tallies and three assists from junior Kyle Ton (Norwich, Conn.). Eason added two goals for the Mustangs, who also received markers off the sticks of senior Alex Zito (Andover, Conn.) and junior Owen LaPorte (Farmington, Conn.).
Junior Bailey Kennedy (Swampscott, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Emerson with a five-save effort, while senior Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) made eight stops in net in the setback for Mount Ida. The Mustangs outshot the Lions by a 31-27 margin overall, but the hosts held a 21-17 edge in shots on goal and won 19 of 27 face offs for the contest.
Mount Ida travels to Leicester, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to square off with Becker in a non-league outing that begins at Noon, while Emerson hosts Lyndon State in a non-league clash on Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
