FINAL: MOUNT IDA 16, BECKER 5
LEICESTER, Mass. -- Junior Kyle Ton (Norwich, Conn.) netted five goals and three assists for eight points to lead Mount Ida to a 16-5 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Becker Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The visiting Mustangs (2-6) scored the first seven goals of the contest, including a pair off the stick of junior Owen LaPorte (Farmington, Conn.), to build a 7-1 advantage at the break, and after the host Hawks (1-6) closed back to within five on sophomore Jack Schneider’s (Morrisville, Vt.) tally five minutes after intermission, Mount Ida used a natural hat trick from Ton to ignite a four-goal run and take an 11-3 edge into the final 15 minutes of play. Freshman Matthew Guerin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) collected the first two markers of the fourth quarter to again slice Becker’s deficit to six, but the visitors iced their triumph by scoring the last four goals of the match that included man-up tallies from Ton and sophomore Dakari Eason (Norwalk, Conn.) that accounted for the final margin.
Eason scored two goals and added four assists to finish with six points in the win for the Mustangs, who received a pair of tallies and two helpers from senior Marcus Donahue (Braintree, Mass.). LaPorte notched an assist to go with his two markers on the day for Mount Ida, which received a goal and an assist each from junior Dylan DiLena (Barre, Vt.) and freshman Mike Alibrandi (Holliston, Mass.). Juniors Matt Curran (Abington, Mass.) and Adam Lavallee (Pawtucket, R.I.), along with freshman Michael Muench (Maplewood, N.J.), also scored for Mount Ida, which received a helper off the stick of senior Joe Gengarelly (Sag Harbor, N.Y.).
Guerin finished with a hat trick in the setback for Becker, which received a goal and an assist from Schneider, a tally from senior Blake Gordon (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and a helper from senior Nicholas Mariano (Cranston, R.I.) on the afternoon. Senior Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) picked up the win in goal for Mount Ida with a four-save effort, while sophomore Trey McMillen (Grapevine, Tex.) made 19 stops in the setback for the Hawks as the Mustangs outshot Becker by a 68-13 margin overall (35-9 on net) while receiving 10 face-off wins from senior Alex Zito (Andover, Conn.).
Mount Ida travels to Standish, Maine on Saturday afternoon to take on Saint Joseph’s (Maine) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference outing that begins at 3:30 p.m., while Becker hosts the University of Dallas in a non-league clash on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field beginning at 3:00 p.m.
