Mount Ida College men's lacrosse junior Matthew Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody) scored his fifth goal of the game with 44 seconds remaining in overtime to give the visiting Mustangs a 12-11 victory over the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth in a non-conference game at Cressy Field Saturday in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Mount Ida snatches their first win of the season improving to 1-1 and has yet to play a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) match-up. The Corsairs fall to 0-1.
Savage fired home a shot from 10 feet away that spoiled a late comeback by the Corsairs, who scored twice in the final 64 seconds to tie the game.
With his team, trailing, 11-9, sophomore attackman Austin Roy (Sandwich, MA/Tabor Academy) scored to cut Mount Ida's lead to a single goal. Twenty seconds later, senior attackman Andrew Foster (Danvers, MA/Danvers) came out from behind the net and scored the tying goal to send the game into overtime.
Foster, junior midfielder Stephen Espinola (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable) and Ray scored to give UMass Dartmouth a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. Sophomore midfielder Alex Reposa (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) made it 4-2 early in the second quarter, but the Mustangs got consecutive goals from senior midfielder Christopher Propete (Waltham, MA/Waltham), sophomore midfielder Derek O'Reilly (East Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) and Savage to take a 5-4 lead.
Sophomore midfielder Christian Roberto (Wakefield, MA/Malden Catholic) tied it for Dartmouth with five minutes left in the first half, and junior attackman Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic ) then scored the first of his four consecutive goals to give the Corsairs a 6-5 lead at intermission.
Arsenault scored three times in the first 3:14 of the third quarter to make it 9-5, but Mount Ida scored the next six goals to take an 11-9 advantage. Savage, senior attackman Brandon Keith (Barnstable, MA/Barnstable) and Prophete scored before the end of the third quarter, and the same three Mustangs scored again to give Mount Ida a two-goal lead with 1:42 remaining.
Savage finished with five goals to lead Mount Ida while Prophete followed with three scores of his own in the win. Freshman Nike Yacuzzi (Oakham, MA/St. John's) dished out three assists while junior's Paul Battapaglia (Clinton, CT/Morgan) and Derek Broughton (Peabody, MA/Peabody) added one assist a piece.
Mustang sophomore goalie Jimmy McAllister (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy) made 15 for Mount Ida. Sophomore goaltender Cameron Crown (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) made 10 saves for UMass Dartmouth. The Corsairs and the Mustangs were each scoreless in four man-up opportunities. The Corsairs outshot the Mustangs, 44-29.
The Mount Ida men's lacrosse program will travel to Kean University this coming Saturday for more non-conference action starting at 1:00 p.m. in New Jersey.
