WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Mount Ida College is still looking for their first win of the season, as they dropped a pair of games this weekend at the Westfield State University Holiday Inn Express Tip Off Tournament.
Saturday, November 19th – Colby-Sawyer 84, Mount Ida 80
Sophomore guard Jourdain Bell (Bishop Brady/Manchester, N.H.) scored a game-high 29 points to lead Colby Sawyer College to an 84-80 win over Mount Ida College in the consolation game of the Rick Martin – Holiday Inn Express Tip Off Tournament at Westfield State University's Woodward Center on Saturday afternoon.
Colby Sawyer (1-2) built a 50-32 halftime lead and extended that lead to 20 on a Bell steal and dunk just 1:45 into the second half, but then Mount Ida (0-3) used a 21-4 run over the next seven minutes to pull within three points, at 56-53, on a Brendan Cunningham (Quincy, Mass.) jumper with 11:34 left in the half.
Colby-Sawyer extended the lead back to 10 points, 66-56 on a Matt Maynard (Rice/Shelburne, Vt.) layup with 8:15 to play, but Mount Ida turned up the defensive pressure as the half wore on to chisel the lead all the way down to one point, 72-71, with 3:34 left in the game on a layup by Jason Clark (Del Valle/Austin, Texas).
The Chargers boosted the lead back to seven, 81-74, on a traditional three-point play by Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) with 30 seconds left in regulation time, but again the Mustangs sawed the lead back down, pulling to within two points at 82-80 on a Joey DeFillippi (Bristol Central/Bristol, Conn.) trifecta with four seconds left.
Bell sealed the deal for Colby Sawyer with a pair of late free throws.
Bell finished 7-16 from the floor, 4-8 from three-point range and made all 11 of his free throw attempts. He also dished out five assists and came away with five steals. Taylor Grande (Bedford, N.H.) added 12 points on 4-5 shooting from three point range, and Nate Cook (Lewis S. Mills/Burlington, Conn.) added 10 points. Bean finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.
For Mount Ida, Ethan Dujon (Toll Gate/Warwick, RI) led with 19 points, Clark added 16 points, five assists and nine steals, and Cunningham tallied 13 points with five rebounds and three steals. The Mustangs forced Colby Sawyer into 32 turnovers in the game, but the Chargers connected on 23 of 25 free throw tries to help balance the books.
Friday, November 18th: Westfield State 91, Mount Ida 65
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior guard Jesus Sanchez (Holderness School/Springfield, Mass.) scored 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Westfield State University to a 91-65 win over Mount Ida College in the Rick Martin / Holiday Inn Express Tip Off tournament at the Woodward Center on Friday night.
Westfield State took a 43-28 lead into the half. Mount Ida hung around for the first 10 minutes of the second half, chipping the Owls lead down to as few as nine points on two occasions, the last with 9:46 left on a three pointer by Brendan Cunningham (Quincy, Mass.).
The Owls then spurted away on an 14-0 run over the next two minutes, getting a layup from Peter Mafo (Lynn Classical/Lynn, Mass.), three straight three pointers from sophomore Cam Earle (South Hadley, Mass.) and another three from Sanchez to cap the run and give the Owls a comfortable 76-53 lead with 8:10 left in the game.
Sanchez shot 7-11 from the floor, 4-7 from three-point land and 10-11 at the line in his big night. Junior guard Allister Williams(Bedford/Boston, Mass.) added 14 points, Earle 12, and Shane Pasquantonio (Ashland, Mass.) 10 for Westfield State, now 1-0 this season.
The Mustangs were led by 15 points from Ethan Dujon (Toll Gate/Warwick, R.I.). Errald Jordine (Hyde School/Stamford, Conn.) added 13 and Jayson Clark (Del Valle/Austin, Texas) 11, while Cunningham finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Mount Ida travels to Newbury on Tuesday, November 22nd for a 7:00 pm tip-off in their final pre-Thanksgiving game.
