MANCHESTER, N.H.—Mount Ida defensive lineman Dominick Spaulding (West Hartford, Conn.) was selected as one of the top players in the region among both divisions two and three, after a standout junior season.
Spaulding was picked as one of 28 members of the 2014 New England Football Writers (NEFW) Division II/III All-New England team.
Just four players from Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) members were selected by the football writers, and Spaulding was one of 21 Division III athletes honored this season.
With 10.5 sacks, Spaulding led the ECFC and was ranked fifth in the nation in sacks per game. He was also tops in the conference with four forced fumbles and 78 yards from tackles for loss, of which he had 17, good for third in the conference.
Spaulding racked up 45 tackles on the year in just nine games played, good for 5.0 tackles per game, and also had two pass breakups and a blocked kick.
His most impressive performance came in a 22-0 win against Becker, in which he set a program record with eight tackles for a loss and had three sacks, helping Mount Ida set a team record with nine sacks in a game.
Spaulding is the third straight Mustang to be named to the NEFW All-New England team, joining offensive linemen Matt Bonomolo (2012) and Frank Civitello (2013).
The Division II Northeast-10 Conference had seven players selected, while from Division III the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference had six picks, while the New England Football Conference, the New England Small College Athletic Conference and the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference had four picks each. Three players came from Springfield College and WPI which are not affiliated with a New England conference.
The team will be honored at the New England Football Writers Captains and Awards Banquet on Thursday, December 11, at the Montvale Plaza, in Stoneham, Mass. People interested in attending should contact Dick Lipe at Bentley University at 781-891-2334.
