DANBURY, Conn. -- Junior defensive lineman Dominick Spaulding (West Hartford, Conn.) is the second consecutive Mount Ida football player to earn recognition from the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) as the Defensive Player of the Week.
Spaulding had a historically dominant day on defense, helping Mount Ida to a 22-0 shutout of Becker at Alumni Field. All eight of Spaulding's solo tackles on the day were for a loss of yardage, and he pushed the Hawks back a total of 32 yards on his own. He also had 3 solo sacks for a loss of 19 yards and one of those sacks pushed Becker into their own end zone for a Mount Ida safety.
He also had one quarterback hurry on the day, as he was in the Becker backfield all game, and his pressure on Becker's quarterbacks led to a pair of Mount Ida interceptions, one of which was returned for a Mustang touchdown.
Linebacker Kalyn Smithson (Vilseck, Germany) was selected for the same honor a week ago after he helped Mount Ida beat Gallaudet by forcing a pair of fumbles.
Spaulding and the Mustangs were also recognized by D3football.com for their defensive performance after Mount Ida shutout Becker 22-0 last Saturday afternoon.
