NEWTON, Mass. – After a 22-0 shutout victory over Becker College, Mount Ida College saw a pair of football players recognized by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) as Players of the Week.
Junior defensive back Dominick Spaulding (West Hartford, Conn.) was named ECFC Defensive Player of the Week, while first year punter Devin Broadley (Hyannis, Mass.) was tabbed as the conference Rookie of the Week.
Spaulding had a historically dominant day on defense, helping Mount Ida to a 22-0 shutout of Becker at Alumni Field. All eight of Spaulding's solo tackles on the day were for a loss of yardage, and he pushed the Hawks back a total of 32 yards on his own. He also had 3 solo sacks for a loss of 19 yards and one of those sacks pushed Becker into their own end zone for a Mount Ida safety.
Spaulding also had one quarterback hurry on the day, as he was in the Becker backfield all game, and his pressure on Becker's quarterbacks led to a pair of Mount Ida interceptions, one of which was returned for a Mustang touchdown.
Under rainy and windy conditions, Broadley punted nine times for an average of 33.3 yards and boomed a long of 46 yards. Most importantly, he pinned the Hawks inside of their own twenty yard line on four occasions, with his best effort being downed just inside the Becker five yard line, helping Mount Ida win the field position game in their shutout victory over the Hawks.
The Mustangs are on the road for the final time this season next Saturday when they head to Anna Maria for a 1:00 pm start against the Amcats.
