NEWTON, Mass. -- Running back EJ Isom became the first freshman to be honored by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC), as he was named ECFC Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Isom had a stand-out day running the ball for Mount Ida in the 54-36 conference win over Anna Maria last week. He gained 108 yards on just 9 rushes, an average of 12.0 yards per rush, and scampered for two touchdowns, both on 30-yard bursts to the outside of the tackles.
Isom gave the Mustangs a 26-21 lead with his first TD late in the first half, a lead they would not relinquish in their 56-34 win over Anna Maria. The first-year also caught one pass i nthe game, for nine yards.
The second leading rusher on the Mustangs this season, Isom has racked up 180 yards on the ground, and leads the team in yards per carry, with 7.2.
He is the third Mount Ida football player to earn ECFC Player of the Week status, joining defensive back Jovan Wilkins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and last week's offensive award winner, quarterback Jawad Yatim (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
Isom and the Mustangs will be on the road this weekend at Becker. Mount Ida will be looking for its third ECFC victory when they kickoff at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
